How to Do the Involuntary Arm Levitation Trick
Learn the classic Kohnstamm phenomenon illusion where your arm feels completely weightless and rises automatically after sustained isometric contraction.

๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Standard doorway frame
- โ Stopwatch or phone timer
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Comfortable clothing with free shoulder movement
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Ensure the floor is clear of tripping hazards before closing eyes or relaxing.
- โข Do not push with excessive force to avoid straining shoulder muscles or wrists.
- โข Stop immediately if you feel joint pain or dizziness.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Position Yourself Inside the Doorway
Stand squarely in the center of an open doorway. Allow both arms to hang straight down at your sides with your knuckles lightly touching the inner frame.
- โข Torso centered between door jambs
- โข Arms hanging fully vertical along the frame
- โข Standing too far forward or backward relative to the frame
- โข Bending elbows excessively
Set Hand Placement for Isometric Pressure
Rotate your hands so the backs of your wrists or fists press flat against the inside of the door frame. Keep your elbows nearly straight with only a micro-bend.
- โข Back of both hands or wrists firmly pressed against the wood trim
- โข Using fingertips instead of the backs of the wrists
- โข Locking elbow joints completely stiff
Apply Outward Pressure for 30 Seconds
Push outward against the door frame with moderate, steady effort as if trying to raise your arms into a T-pose. Maintain steady breathing and hold this isometric push continuously for 30 to 45 seconds.
- โข Visible engagement of deltoid muscles without shifting feet
- โข Timer running for at least 30 seconds
- โข Holding your breath during the push
- โข Pushing at maximum force instead of steady moderate pressure
Step Out into Open Space
Release the outward pressure cleanly and immediately take one step forward into an open room. Ensure there are no walls, furniture, or obstacles within arm's reach.
- โข User standing fully clear of the doorway frame
- โข Arms hanging loosely by the sides
- โข Pausing too long inside the doorway after releasing pressure
- โข Stepping toward furniture or wall corners
Relax and Observe the Involuntary Lift
Completely relax your shoulders and arm muscles while keeping your stance stable. Allow your arms to rise naturally on their own as the primed muscle fibers continue contracting without conscious effort.
- โข Arms floating outward and upward effortlessly away from the body
- โข Shoulders resting in a low, natural posture
- โข Consciously resisting the lifting sensation
- โข Forcing the arms up intentionally rather than letting the reflex occur

Don’t have everything?
- No Standard doorway frame? Two sturdy vertical wall surfaces or a narrow hallway
- No Stopwatch or phone timer? Counting slowly to 30 out loud
