How to Patch a Bike Inner Tube

📋 Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Unseat the Tire Bead
Deflate the tire completely by depressing the valve core. Insert the spoon end of a tire lever under one tire bead, hook the other end to a spoke, and slide a second lever around the rim circumference to pop one side of the tire off.

Extract Tube and Inspect Tire Casing
Pull the inner tube out from the tire, keeping note of its orientation relative to the valve hole. Carefully run a rag around the inside cavity of the tire casing to catch any sharp thorns, glass shards, or wires embedded in the rubber.

Locate and Mark the Puncture
Inflate the removed tube with several pumps until it holds its round shape. Submerge sections in a water basin or slowly rotate it near your ear until bubbles or a hissing hiss pinpoints the leak, then dry and mark the hole with an 'X'.

Abrade the Rubber Surface
Deflate the tube completely. Use fine sandpaper or the metal scuffer to aggressively rough up an area slightly larger than your patch, removing the slick mold release agent and rubber seams until the surface is matte gray.

Apply Cement and Allow to Tack Dry
Spread a thin, even coat of vulcanizing rubber cement over the entire scuffed area. Allow the solvent to evaporate undisturbed for 2 to 3 minutes until the liquid sheen disappears and the surface turns completely dull and tacky.

Apply Patch and Apply Pressure
Peel the foil backing from the patch without touching the orange vulcanizing layer. Center the patch over the puncture mark, press it down firmly with your thumbs, and roll a hard tool or tire lever edge over it from center to edges for 60 seconds.

Reinstall Tube, Seat Tire, and Inflate
Add just enough air to give the tube round shape, insert the valve through the rim hole, tuck the tube inside the tire, and push the tire bead back over the rim using only your palms. Check both sides to confirm no tube is caught under the bead, then inflate to rated PSI.
